Peatland Restoration: 12,708 Hectares of Land in the Sembilang Landscape Targeted to Recover

A total of 12,708 ha of land in the Sembilang Landscape, Musi Banyuasin Regency, the majority of which is peat forest is targeted to recover by 2022.
The restoration or restoration of the area is carried out in collaboration by multi-stakeholders, namely the Green Trade Initiative Foundation (IDH), APP Sinar Mas, the Cinta Desa Movement and Government of Musi Banyuasin (Muba) Regency, South Sumatra.. IDH Foundation Program Director Nassat Idrus said Sembilang Muba is a very important landscape to ensure sustainability in the region. "We take an approach including restoration, protection and production to restore the landscape in a sustainable manner," he said during the Collaboration for Restoration webinar. According to him, in order for the vision to restore landscapes to be achieved, it is necessary to involve a number of parties, including the local community and government. “In order for the landscape vision to work, it needs to be supported by several main components. These include government, market, network, how the vision is integrated, business and investment, in order to achieve the desired goals," he said. Meanwhile, Head of Landscape Conservation, Health, Safety & Environment Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Sinar Mas Jasmine NP Doloksaribu said his party supports restoration in the Sembilang Landscape through various strategies. "This activity also covers the concession area of ​​5 forest management units (UMH) in Muba," he said. According to him, restoration in the concession has been carried out since the last 3 years, where an area of ​​3,254 ha has been realized or 27% of the target. He added that the presence of the community in the buffer zone of the Sembilang Landscape, continued Jasmine, played an important role in securing and preserving the area.
