Berau Coal's Various Innovations Realize Food Self-Reliance and the Tasuk Village's Economy
PT Berau Coal continues to prove its contribution to building a better social environment. Through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, the company assists Tasuk Village in Gunung Tabur District, Berau, to make the village self-sufficient in food and economically independent.
The majority of the residents of Tasuk Village work as farmers. Around 40 percent of the farmers are of productive age. The head of the Padat Karya Farmers Group from Tasuk Village, Purnomo, explained a number of agricultural problems. One of them is about the difficulty of farmers selling their rice to the market. Purnomo said the agricultural productivity of Kampung Tasuk was around 5 tons per hectare. However, agricultural products marketed are very low, only around 1 ton per year. Meanwhile, the use of chemical fertilizers is high, reaching 700 kilograms per hectare. The dependence of Tasuk Village's income from the mining sector is the next problem. Purnomo explained that about 61 percent of the economy of Kampung Tasuk relies on mining and 150 families work odd jobs. “There is also no regeneration in the agricultural sector. Most of the time, agriculture is in the hands of the elderly,” he explained.
