Stop Coal, INDONESIA's New Renewable Energy Mix Target in 2025 Still Minus 11.5 Percent

The government continues to pursue the target of retiring the use of coal as the main source of electricity in steam power plants (PLTU) by 2030.
In this scenario, it is planned that 5.5 GW of steam power plants will be retired before that year. The use of coal will later be replaced by new renewable energy sources (EBT). For the short term, the government targets to achieve a 23 percent NRE mix in 2025. However, until early 2022, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) noted that the new and renewable energy (EBT) mix had only reached 11.5 percent. This means that there is still 11.5 percent more to pursue the short-term target of 23 percent of the NRE mix in 2025. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif said that the government is targeting to implement rooftop solar panels by 2025, as well as develop the EBT mix to 10.6 GW. . "We have to stop coal-fired power plants and convert the use of diesel fuel to gas. In Indonesia we have quite a lot of gas," said Arifin in front of investors at the 2022 Mandiri Investment Forum event,

The Fate of the Office Property Business during a Pandemic: Abundant Supply, Quiet Enthusiasts

Real Estate Indonesia (REI) revealed that the property industry, especially the office sector, had a declining market since before the pandemic.
Deputy Chairperson of REI's DPP Ikang Fawzi said the condition was caused by the current high availability of offices, but the absorption has actually decreased. In addition, according to Ikang, currently there has been a shift in work culture, especially during the pandemic, which applies many health protocol rules, such as working at home (WFH). According to Ikang, in the future there will be many changes to be made to suit the current situation. "That's why various efforts were also made in the midst of a pandemic, because people's habits during a pandemic are different. For that we make adjustments, then people buy office space according to their habits of working during a pandemic," he said. Ikang sees that the oversupply of the office sector will make the market more competitive. Like it or not, developers also have to adjust to the office needs in the market.

Weather in 2022 is drier

After two consecutive years of La Nina, resulting in a wetter season, Indonesia must prepare for a drier year in 2022.
In addition to anticipating the risk of forest and land fires, geological disasters can also be more deadly due to the trend of increasing population and economic activity in vulnerable zones. The trend of disaster events in Indonesia in 2021 and future risks was conveyed by disaster experts from the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The speaker was BRIN's earthquake research professor, Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, and BRIN's aviation and space research professor, Muhammad Rokhis Khomarudin, with BRIN's research professor of meteorology and climatology, Edvin Aldrian. Muhammad Rokhis said data since 2015 showed an increase in the frequency of disasters in Indonesia with the dominance of hydrometerological disasters such as floods, land fires, landslides, and tornadoes. However, the most victims and impacts are generally caused by geological disasters. The increasing frequency of wet or dry logical hydrometer disasters is a combination of increasing extreme weather and environmental changes. According to Edvin, the weather conditions in Indonesia in the future will be greatly influenced by changes in sea surface temperature in the Pacific Ocean, which are the main components for the formation of ENSO, both El Nino and La Nina. After experiencing La Nina in 2020 and continuing in 2021, 2022 is predicted to be drier, although not yet in the extreme category. “There has never been a record of La Nina happening three years in a row. According to IPCC projections, it is very possible that El Nino will return even if it is moderate. So, please prepare water, including the agricultural sector to prepare for a dry cropping pattern," said Edvin.

'Aggressive' Tariff for Super Rich Taxpayers

The expansion of the Individual Income Tax (PPh) bracket is carried out by increasing the tariff for taxpayers with high enough income. In the current regulations, the government only applies four types of personal income tax rates.
The first is 5% for the layer of Taxable Income (PKP) up to IDR 50 million per year. Second 15% for PKP layers above Rp50 million—Rp250 million, third 25% for PKP layers above Rp250 million—Rp500 million, and fourthly the tariff is 30% for PKP layers above Rp500 million. As for the Draft Law (RUU) concerning the Fifth Amendment to Law no. 6/1983 concerning General Provisions and Tax Procedures (KUP), the government plans to divide the fourth layer, in which individual taxpayers with income above IDR 5 billion will be subject to a 35% rate. "This is part of the government's plan to target the public or individual high-wealth taxpayers," said Director of Counseling, Services and Public Relations at the Directorate General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance, Neilmaldrin Noor, to Bisnis last week. The Directorate General of Taxes noted that the additional bracket with reference to the 35% tariff will contribute to income tax of Rp16 trillion. This figure is equivalent to 19.7% of the total personal income tax collected by the government. However, Neil said that the potential figure that could be explored by the government could change in line with the increase or decrease in the number of targeted taxpayers. "The timing of the implementation of this new tariff and its potential revenue is still under discussion," he explained. According to him, the scheme can further increase the contribution of tax revenue from high net worth individuals in the long term without disrupting the financial structure of the lower middle class.
